What is an EcoBoost Engine?

The “boost” in EcoBoost stands for turbocharging, also known as forced induction. Combined with direct injection, turbocharging increases the power output of an engine without the need to increase displacement. Previously left to the domain of race car and large diesel engines, turbocharging has become more common in passenger vehicles, and Ford’s EcoBoost is a notable example.

By forcing air into an engine under pressure, a smaller-displacement engine can get the benefit of more oxygen for a more efficient burn and more power. Engines are essentially large air pumps, and a turbo helps to move the oxygen required to burn the fuel through the engine more quickly and efficiently.

When turbocharging is added to larger displacement V6 engines, like in the Ford F-150’s EcoBoost V6, the resulting increase in power and torque give the motor the equivalent power of a larger displacement V8. Torque?often associated with pulling power in trucks?is one of the largest benefits of turbocharging. Advances in turbocharging technology have made the technology more affordable and reliable than ever before.
